DPG, or dipropylene glycol, is the alcohol-free way to dilute your oils for perfume. It helps the ingredients blend, takes the edge off a harsh note and keeps the fragrance stable in the bottle.
It is also the base for everything with no alcohol in it at all: oil based perfumes, roll-ons, perfume body oils and oil based colognes. Cologne oils are made exactly the same way; only the fragrance changes. If you want a scent that sits close to the skin and holds rather than filling a room, this is the base for it. Alongside perfumer’s alcohol and ethanol, it is the third of the three base oils for perfume we carry.

- What is DPG used for in perfume making?
- Two things. It dilutes concentrated perfume oil without alcohol, and it improves how the ingredients sit together, softening harshness and helping the blend stay stable over time.
- How do I make an oil based perfume or a roll-on?
- You dilute perfume oil with DPG instead of alcohol, then bottle it in a roll-on or a dab bottle. Whether you call the result a body oil perfume, a roll-on or an oil based cologne, it is the same method; only the fragrance and the bottle change. There is no spray and no alcohol, so it sits closer to the skin, projects less and often outlasts a spray made from the same oil.
- Is DPG better than alcohol?
- Neither is better; they do different jobs. Alcohol gives you a spray that projects and opens fast. DPG gives you an alcohol-free product that stays close and suits daily wear, roll-ons and skin that reacts to alcohol. Many makers sell both from the same oil.
- Does DPG make perfume last longer?
- Not directly. It improves blending and stability rather than longevity. A fixative is what slows the fade, and the grade of oil you started with sets the ceiling.
- What sizes does DPG come in?
