Perfumer’s alcohol is the base you mix perfume oil into to make a spray. It arrives ready blended, so there is nothing to prepare and nothing to get wrong on your first batch.
Choose it over ethanol when you want the clean, refined spray without working anything out. Ethanol costs less by the litre and gives you more control, but it asks more of you. Almost everyone making their first few bottles should start here.

Perfumer's Alcohol — common questions
- What is perfumers alcohol used for?
- It is the carrier in a spray perfume. It dissolves the perfume oil, spreads it evenly when you spray, then evaporates and leaves the scent behind rather than a wet patch. Without it you have concentrated oil that will not atomise.
- Perfumer's alcohol or ethanol: which should I buy?
- Perfumer's alcohol is blended and ready to use, which removes a whole category of beginner mistakes. Ethanol is the raw solvent, cheaper by the litre, and makes more sense once you are mixing regularly rather than occasionally. Start with perfumer's alcohol and move to ethanol when volume makes the cost per litre worth it.
- How much perfumer's alcohol do I need per bottle?
- It depends on the concentration you are aiming for and how strong the oil is; a soft oil needs more of itself in the blend than a loud one. The tested proportions for each style are in the Complete Perfume Mastery Blueprint.
- Can I use it for an oil based perfume or a roll-on?
- No. Anything alcohol-free uses DPG instead. Perfumer's alcohol is for sprays.
